Today's devotional- Isaiah 50:7 "For the Lord God will help me therefore shall I not be confounded; therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed."
What does it mean to 'set my face like a flint'. Strangely- there isn't a lot of cultural context here... it just MEANS what it says. In the passage- Isaiah is struggling with the persecution he is encountering- as he serves God righteously- and the world is pushing back against God's Word (by persecuting Isaiah). What Isaiah is committing himself here to do- is to set his LIFE as a thing that stands against the world... in contrast... in conflict with the world around him that is trying to stand against God. Specifically, Isaiah realizes He is the contact point between the 'messed-up' world and God's will (which is the cure for the broken world). Isaiah is a FLINT- a thing that (when rubbed the wrong way) will create a spark. Isaiah, through the power of God's will in him- has become an instrument of God's will- to create the spark that will ignite the fire of God's Holy Spirit- to change the world around him. The world around Isaiah wants him to be ashamed of his actions- standing against the ways of the world- but Isaiah will not be ashamed for the Good News he is bringing.
